First off, let me start by telling you that getting a scholarship from the university itself is oftentimes easier than securing an external scholarship offered abroad. Typically, for engineering-related masters, scholarships are awarded based on the strength of the application (Something which I have addressed in the latter part of this answer). Assuming your GPA, projects and work experience are in order; if you have a clear cut and relevant long-term goal, and your essays are strong you should be able to get a scholarship from a European school. The most important thing though is to apply early. Apply early, apply strong. That is the best thing you can do to get a scholarship at a European university. There are several different ways you can get a scholarship at a foreign university. Here are 3 major ways to get them.

1.) Scholarship essays- Among the most common ways to apply for a scholarship is to write a strong scholarship essay when prompted in the application. Scholarship essays need to show the strength of your profile in terms of the diverse experiences you bring in. You need to show that you will be a valuable contributor to the incoming class. You also need to show that your drive and long term ambitions will enable you to become a valuable contributor to the university’s alumni network. The university portal will give you clear access to the scholarship forms while you’re applying to the university itself. You likely will not miss it. (Note that the contents of the essay may need to vary in case there is a specific prompt. But most prompts will need you to cover these generally)

2.) Need-based Scholarships- A limited number of universities offer need-based scholarships. In these cases, aid is offered on the basis of your ability to pay for the course and not on your academic abilities. Need-based scholarship forms typically ask for proof of your IT returns and assets. They may require an essay as well. Grapevine students have secured 40% need-based tuition waivers at universities like Dartmouth.

3.) The strength of your application- In a lot of cases, you needn’t submit an additional essay or a form to get a scholarship. If your academic profile and essay in the general application are very strong for a given university, the university will offer aid automatically along with the admit. Several Gradvine students have received aid from universities like Purdue and Carnegie Mellon without submitting an additional scholarship application. The scholarships have ranged from $6000 to $24,000. We’ve had scholarships to European universities like TU Delft (6000–10000 Euros) as well.

Apart from scholarships, you can also apply for Research Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships. It is important that you network well with professors during your first semester at the university. If you’ve taken relevant courses in your undergrad, performed well in those courses, and have a good IELTS/TOEFL score, you should be able to secure these.
